Finally, EFAS-DISS duty forecasters analyse the flood summary maps and issue notifications to registered users of the concerned region to inform them of possible upcoming events (Figure 2). This article introduces the new 6‑hourly calibration of the LISFLOOD hydrological model and provides a summary of its performance. For EFAS version 4.0, a total drainage area of 4M km2 was calibrated so that the hydrological representation of those catchments can be as accurate link as possible (Figure 1). This dual calibration strategy (both at 6‑hourly and daily time steps) was critical to guarantee the best possible geographical coverage as 6‑hourly river discharge data was not available everywhere. Stations where a minimum of four years of good-quality discharge data were available were selected as calibration points. By upgrading the full EFAS medium-range modelling chain to a 6‑hourly timestep, all forcing fields, including observed meteorological data to simulate initial conditions, needed to also be produced at the finer time step. For the LISFLOOD model, this includes gridded maps of precipitation, average air temperature, evaporation rate from free water surface and bare soil surface, and potential evapotranspiration for reference crop surfaces. EFAS historical river discharge data

As the field boundary runs along the centre of the hedge, each can claim their respective half of the hedge. Overall, EFAS 4 shows a marked improvement in the hydrological performance compared with EFAS 3, with more stations achieving a higher KGE’ score as shown by the cumulative distribution function. About 60% of stations have a KGE’ of 0.75 or higher, against only 40% for EFAS 3 (Figure 5a). In recent years, EFAS has achieved a leading position within the international “Foot and Ankle Community.” Today, it is recognized as the most dynamic and largest international foot and ankle society worldwide. The approach in 3 phases – theorical presentation, faculty demonstration, and practical work – is similar to basic course. The participants work with fresh cadaver specimens, all tested and with all safety guarantees. It has been an honor to serve as EFAS President for the past two years, and I sincerely thank you for your trust.

EFAS Travelling Fellowship

The GFM product is designed to deliver, in near real-time, critical information on ongoing floods events to users worldwide, including national authorities, emergency units, research centres, decision-makers and other stakeholders. GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal. The calibration process resulted in 14 new parameter maps over the pan-European EFAS extent, one per calibrated parameter.

The European Flood Awareness System (EFAS), developed to produce European overviews on ongoing and forecasted floods up to 10 days in advance, contributes to better protection of the European citizen, the environment, property and cultural heritage. In addition, detailed forecasts are also available at stations where the national services are providing river discharge data. More than 900 registered users from 70 hydrological services and civil protection services in Europe are part of the EFAS network, whilst GloFAS has over 6000 registered users. The release of EFAS version 4 marks a milestone in EFAS development, delivering a first system calibrated with sub-daily data. For the fairest comparison possible between EFAS versions 3 and 4, the hydrological model performance score KGE’ was calculated on simulations using the same meteorological forcing data (but aggregated to daily forcing for EFAS 3) over 1990–2017.

The official documentation (Model Output – Copernicus Emergency Management Service – CEMS – ECMWF Confluence Wiki) gives the units as meters. BOFAS has entered a partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and together we have created a combined set of standards, including recommended criteria to be met by both the unit seeking approval for a fellowship programme, and by the fellow. The UK hosts some of the best Foot and Ankle surgical training fellowships in the world. Nevertheless, the BOFAS Education Committee has been working hard on improving the quality of post-CCT training for a decade.

You only need to include the field(s) with EFA options on them to meet your EFA map requirement. Permanent crops are not included in the calculation of your arable area (see the Glossary for a definition of permanent crops). If all the five hectares of EFA is sited on permanent grassland this would now become arable and would be added to give your new total arable area, for the purpose of Greening only. We have also compiled a table in Annex A which you will find helpful in identifying your EFA requirements.

This type of membership is available for those individuals from outside of Europe with strong interest and commitment to the field of foot and ankle surgery. The EFAS hydrological data collection centre (EFASHYDRO) collects historic and real-time river discharge and water level data across Europe from 44 data partners. Metadata such as name, location and upstream drained area are also collected and maintained.

EFFAS shares with the market the expert opinions and conclusions of the debate among qualified professionals within the members of the Federation and the results of surveys of common interest. The impact of this was that the discharge data was shifted in time by 6 hours. Such a working group shall have an appointed convener and a well defined mandate, and shall report results to the General Assembly. ELECTIONS, NOMINATIONSA search committee of three people, appointed by the General Assembly, shall call for nominations to the offices of Vice Chairperson, Secretary-General and Treasurer of the Board, and two auditors, and draw up a list of nominees. The list of nominees shall be presented to the Voting and Non-Voting Representatives of all members at least one month prior to the General Assembly for election every odd year.

Duke-EFAS International Fellowship 2025

The EFAS Research Foundation provides not only means for education of the EFAS members but also of all orthopaedic surgeons, residents, scientists, and all professions dealing with Foot & Ankle. A complete logbook of surgical cases shall be required preferably electronically for ratification by the examination board before proceeding to the examination. Evidence of appropriate Fellowship training in a Foot and Ankle Surgery Centre of Excellence is desirable but not mandatory at present. The Certification Board recognises that this is very variable depending on the country of origin of candidates and would not wish to disadvantage some EFAS members. However, in the future as the Certificate develops this will become a likely significant component of the proposed Advanced Specialist Certificate.

EFAS Congress

As previously agreed with UEMS this shall be ratified and sanctioned by UEMS. The format will be a 1 hour multiple choice questionnaire comprising 50 questions with five options. A bank of questions has been developed by the examination board and shall be reviewed and updated regularly. The primary aim of the development of a European Certification process in Trauma and Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery is to promote the highest standard of practice in our field of expertise to benefit patients. EFAS holds a biannual international congress each odd year in connection with its General Assembly.

EFAS Research Foundation – MEDARTIS RESEARCH GRANTS for Foot and Ankle Arthrosis and Disorders

The selection procedure produced a list of 1,137 calibration stations in 215 different catchments, 406 with 6‑hourly and 731 with daily observed discharge time series. For EFAS 4, the LISFLOOD domain area was slightly extended to include the Jordan catchment. The river network in the Balkans was also improved to better represent physical rivers in the region, with updates to the channels’ geometry reflecting the changes done to the drainage network.

A bug was identified introducing errors in the initial conditions of all EFAS v5 forecasts since its operational launch on 20 September 2023. The calibration process resulted in 14 new parameter maps over the pan-European EFAS extent, one per calibrated parameter. The advertisements implied that this milk may make children more intelligent because it contained omega-3 fatty acids (from fish).

The two main diseases that cause this condition are lymphocytic thyroiditis (an immune-mediated condition where the body attacks its own cells) and idiopathic gland atrophy (normal thyroid tissue becomes replaced by fat). Genetics are thought to play a part, however, with lymphocytic thyroiditis having a hereditary component. A study published in 2009 showed that Omega 3 oils help to prevent blood clotting and lower blood. Mark’s research interests are varied and diverse with numerous publications and presentations on foot & ankle surgery and knee surgery.

It is much cheaper to manufacture feed pellets from soya, rapeseed or corn with animal by-products and vitamin and mineral supplements. In Canada and Chile, it is common to use other protein sources such as feather or blood meal by-products of chicken and pig production (Soil Association, 2008a). Consequently, farmed fish tend to contain more total fat, but less omega-3s than their wild counterparts (Weaver et al., 2008).

Oily fish

However, the research clearly shows that ALA from plants can protect heart health and doesn’t come laced with poison. Plant-derived EFAs have numerous advantages over fish-derived fats yet are virtually ignored by health professionals. The VVF is trying to address this by pushing for more research including plant-derived ALA alongside the fish oils EPA and/or DHA.

Research suggests that some components in food can act as causative agents of autoimmune disease. For example, there is strong evidence that proteins found in cow’s milk can trigger an autoimmune response leading to type 1 diabetes in genetically susceptible children. The theory with MS is that proteins from certain foods (such as cow’s milk) may also prompt the immune system to respond inappropriately and attack the myelin sheath in the brain and central nervous system. A large body of evidence shows that populations that consume high quantities of animal-based foods seem to be most affected by MS (Agnello et al., 2004).

The advertisements for this so-called ‘clever milk’ featured the scientist Professor Robert Winston, lending kudos to the outlandish claims. But following complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that the advertisements were misleading and the claims used for the benefits of the milk unproven. The ASA ruled that as the children in the trial had learning difficulties, there was no basis to claim there would be an improvement in the concentration of all children. Dairy Crest, the firm behind the product, withdrew the adverts following the ruling.

Omega-3s from algae – cut out the middleman

• Well of course I can’t be totally sure but I don’t see the hospital announce every surgery to the respective insurance.
• A diet lacking in these foods and rich in meat, dairy and processed foods (such as white bread, white rice and white pasta) does not provide such a good source of nutrients.

Diets that have added essential fatty acids (EFAs) can help to support your dog’s skin and coat condition, which can be poor with hypothyroidism. Cancer-causing compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are formed when meats (such as beef, chicken and pork) and fish are cooked at high temperatures (Wilson et al., 2007). HCAs form when a chemical found in muscles called creatine reacts with amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and sugar at high temperatures.

Improving our diets by cutting out the foods laden with animal fats, sugar, salt and cholesterol and eating more fruit, vegetables, pulses, wholegrains, nuts and seeds. If you have inflammatory arthritis, it may be helpful to replace some of the omega-6 fats (found in sunflower oil, corn oil and products made from them such as sunflower margarines) with omega-3 fats from flaxseed, hempseed and rapeseed oils and walnuts. Obtaining plant-based omega-3s from these sources will ensure you get this healthy fat without exposing your body to the harmful toxins found in oily fish. One of the best-known early studies was the Diet and Reinfarcation Trial (DART) (Burr et al., 1989). This study looked at the effects of dietary intervention in the secondary prevention of heart attacks in patients who had previously recovered from one. In this study 2,033 men who had recovered from a heart attack were allocated to receive or not receive advice to eat around 300 grams of oily fish per week, or take fish oil supplements giving an equivalent amount of omega-3 fats.

Plant EFAs leading the way to good health

This unhealthy type of fat tends to come from animal-based food (particularly meat, poultry and dairy products) and processed foods (cakes, pastry and biscuits). This unhealthy fat is the most important kind to avoid as it can increase pain and inflammation in arthritis (ARC, 2006). Interestingly, although there were less fatal heart attacks among the DART fish group, the total number of attacks was not reduced. So although eating oily fish reduced the risk of dying after a heart attack, it did not prevent a secondary heart attack. Whereas a large body of evidence shows that plant-based diets can be used to both prevent and even reverse heart disease (see the guide Have a Heart for further information).

The body converts ALA into the longer chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA), otherwise found in fish and some species of algae. However, we are repeatedly told (particularly by fish oil supplement companies) that conversion rates are low and inefficient. The claim that we cannot convert enough ALA to EPA and DHA is simply not true, but does serve to protect the fish oil market.

What are fats?

Dogs are omnivores, gaining their essential nutrients from both animal and plant sources. Their wolf relations are opportunistic eaters, hunting and scavenging what is available to them. But their digestive systems are still well adapted to eating a wide range of foods. The EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) run by ECMWF uses global and regional air quality ensembles for atmospheric monitoring. For longer-range forecasting, the ensemble seasonal forecasting system SEAS5 feeds products like the EU’s European and Global Flood Awareness Systems (EFAS and GloFAS). Ensembles are also commonly used for the communication of climate scenarios such as the International Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) emission scenarios. The widely publicised supposed health benefits of omega-3 fats from fish, together with dwindling supplies of fish caught from the wild, have spawned a dramatic expansion in aquaculture (farmed fish).

• This may be in parts of Europewhere sunflower oil is used almost exclusively, or in developing countries where palm oil is used (both oils lack ALA).

As stated, the three amigos of the antioxidant world are beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C and vitamin E. Plant foods (including fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds) are the best sources. In the largest, most comprehensive analysis to date of the antioxidant content of commonly consumed foods cranberries, blueberries and blackberries ranked highest among the fruits studied.

Dietary recommendations, he suggests, should be based on diets similar to that used in the Lyon study. If more people knew that they could produce sufficient amounts of EPA and DHA from ALA they might be less inclined to turn to potentially decaying and contaminated fish oils. The research indicates that the only thing vegetarians and vegans miss out on by avoiding fish is the toxic pollutants that contaminate them. Poorly designed diets are thought to reduce the rate of conversion as both energy and protein are needed to drive the enzymes that convert EFAs.

Others agree that the most likely mechanism by which EPA and DHA reduce the recurrence of heart disease is by stabilising arrhythmias (Marchiolo et al., 2002). Research suggests that the anti-arrhythmic effect of omega-3 fats is partly due to their ability to reduce the electrical excitability of cells. Results showed that the fish group had a 29 per cent reduction in death during the two year recovery period following a heart attack. So it was concluded that fish oil may reduce CVD mortality; the effect being greatest during the period of recovery following a heart attack.

Dementia and diet

There is undoubtedly an element of genetic predisposition in MS but the evidence suggests that this disease is more strongly related to environmental factors than genes. In other words, a person may have a genetic predisposition to the disease but not develop it unless exposed to a specific environmental ‘trigger’. MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) affecting young adults in the UK. It currently affects around 85,000 people in the UK and can occur at any age, but in most cases symptoms first appear between the ages of 20 and 40. The majority of patients with MS have the relapsing-remitting form of the disease, characterised by attacks or relapses interspersed with periods of recovery or remission (Harbige and Sharief, 2007). It is a life-long condition, but it is not terminal and people with MS can expect to live as long https://www.efas2023.org/forum/ as anyone else (NHS Direct, 2008c).

Latest Education

Anyone can see our diets have changes hugely – our ancestors would have been hard pushed to find burger, chips and a milkshake! Well, studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet indicate that the major changes that have occurred have altered the type and amount of essential fatty acids in our diets (Simopoulos, 2008). So while in many ways our bodies are potentially the same as those of our ancestors, the way we fuel it has changed drastically.

They can work in the Committees but cannot vote in the General Assembly and cannot be elected to join the Council.
